Runners’ Dilemma – Ambition and Reality

When I was first hooked with running, I, like some runners did, pushed myself hard and increased the running distance drastically. Not knowing anyone to consult with, I got injured all over. Obviously, my ambition was greater than my capability. Friends who are not into running told me what I was doing was suicidal. To prove them wrong, I started to research. By reading a lot of information, I gradually learned to avoid possible injury and how to protect myself properly. I also learned although in the hard way to take a few steps back and rest. Unwind myself before standing on the start-line. I also realized ambition had better grow after the capacity has been built.

Now knowing some running pals walked on the track I did, I see déjà vu and felt empathic. I think the reality is that ambition will never wait for anything to be ready for. That's what running got into us and so is the attraction of those never-ending races and challenges. Now I simply enjoy running and try not to take those races seriously. Ambition took a wake-up call from reality finally.

suesu is so very persist person that she can keeping running for many years.for me,I just can't find the motivation that make me enjoy the process.maybe I should get used to running alone.because it's a individual activity.

Before i made my mind to run every, i know the reason  why i must to run---for my health, and the running could not do any bad effect to my body.
run slowly can give you more health.
run faster often brings you injury

Yes, running is an individual activity but group running can be of so much fun. If you live in Shanghai, we meet every Tuesday night at 7pm at Century Park. Please see our site for more information. If you don't live in Shanghai, find a running club that's near you. Try group running and see how you like it. Runners are usually friendly enough to accept new running pals.

Your thread makes me recall one of my friend who was diagnosed as having cyst in the knee joint after 2007 Yangzhou Half-Marathon. He is a surgeon and quit the running forever.

After the first few months training, your running mileage is building up steadily, you can run at faster pace, and you start to feel high when the endorphin is working on you. By the time, it could be very difficult to keep a cool mind, you could be intoxicated by the quick success and not aware of the overtraining which is lurking. You keep running further and further, faster and faster, and more and more often until one day, it pays back.

Too bad that our health cannot be reserved, if we stop working out, it diminishes. That is one of the reason that our body needs long term strategic planning which requires great vision, persistence, patience and discipline. We are not only training our body to run, we are also training our mind to become stronger and achieve our goal in the long run.

Sometime we worry too much about future and make our life miserable today. Tomorrow will alway come but not for everybody!!! Make everyday count!!

"We grow too soon old and too late smart." I couldn't understand what this proverb meant when I first learned it at junior high. Now, I do.
